Admission

The majority of patients are admitted in the Centre as referred cases from the hospitals throughout the country.  The medical officer assess the patient, and when he believes that the patient will benefit from intensive medical rehabilitation he fills in an appropriate form designed to provide medical information needed by the Centre.  This form is sent prior to the patient's coming in the Centre or it comes along with the referred patient.

Some patients come from the communities as referral cases by health workers working in those communities.  The community health worker would also fill in the appropriate form or write a detailed referral letter putting in as much information relating to the client as possible.

Admission / Discharge Policy

The rehabilitation personnel decide on admission, according to the admission criteria.  These are:

1. Prognosis

The condition must not be a rapidly progressive one, but stable or regressive.  The foreseeable functional abilities must be thus that a discharge within 3 months can reasonably be expected.  Furthermore the patient does not require supervised medical treatment.

2. Motivation

Admission is only possible when the patient is motivated to participate actively in the rehabilitation process, aiming at earliest resettlement.

3. Social Circumstances

Relatives and people in the community should be prepared to assist in the resettlement of the patients.

4. Practical Home Situation

Information on the living conditions at home should if possible be obtained to see whether a patient could cope practically after discharge.

5. Availability of Necessary Appliances

It must be foreseeable that any necessary appliances and/or aids for activities of daily living will be available at the time of discharge.

6. Age

Minimal age of 12 years, however, exceptions are made in the case where accessibility to rehabilitation at a children's home is not possible.

Discharge

The Rehabilitation personnel decide on the discharge of patients.  During the time of admission, the ultimate goals for the rehabilitation for each patient are set.  A patient can be discharged when the goals are reached, or otherwise when decided by the admission/discharge committee.  This committee must take into consideration the recommendations of the rehabilitation staff.
