Rehabilitation Technicians School

The school opened in 1999, though rehabilitation services in Malawi started long before this 1999. Medical Assistants and Enrolled Nurses were trained on the job as Malawi Against Physical Disabilities (MAP) Assistants or” Physiotherapy Assistants” by MAP expatriate  Physiotherapists. These assistants worked alongside the expatriate Physiotherapists on the MAP Outreach Programmes in Malawi.

In March 1998, Ann-Marie Brouder of the Centre for Social Research, University of Malawi, carried out a needs assessment study. This study was commissioned by the Physiotherapy Association of Malawi (PAM) in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and Population to find out if there was need for formal rehabilitation training in Malawi. The study, among other findings, described the many problems that people with disabilities generally face in search for a service. There were four differing solutions suggested after this study, but the need for a rehabilitation assistant course was justified. This was also in line with the Malawi National Health Plan 1999-2004, which recognizes the shortage of trained personnel in Malawi, and rehabilitation personnel in particular. Consequently, in 1999 the Rehabilitation Assistants School opened its doors at Kachere Rehabilitation Centre. The training focused on the basic level of care, and the more complicated patients would be referred to existing therapists i.e. physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

A mid-term evaluation of the Rehabilitation Assistants School, by the Medical Council of Malawi recommended to change the course from a two-year certificate to a three-year diploma course, the school has been changed to “Rehabilitation Technician School”. This training is the only of its kind in Malawi and as such it is an integral part to provision of rehabilitation services.

The school trains mid level rehabilitation workers in medical rehabilitation.Entry qualifications is MSCE with credits in English, Mathematics and two science subjects (preferably Biology and Physical Science). Students will end up qualifying with a “Diploma in Medical Rehabilitation”.
